Fairfax County To Discuss Rolling Road VRE Station Improvements

A virtual meeting is planned to discuss planned improvements at the Rolling Road Virginia Railway Express station in Burke. The Fairfax County Department of Transportation will host the meeting on Thursday, June 10 at 7 p.m. The transportation department will discuss its Rolling Road VRE Parking Lot Expansion project. A VRE representative will also be on hand to discuss the Rolling Road platform extension. According to patch.com, "The parking lot project includes adding 38 new parking spaces as well as sidewalk, curb, and stormwater upgrades. The existing sidewalk will be replaced to meet ADA compliance. The curb along Burke Road will be extended to the east to prevent vehicles from parking along the road and in the grass area to the north of the existing parking lot. A retaining wall will also be built around the Dominion transmission tower at the parking lot's northeast corner, and an underground stormwater detention structure will be installed to ensure there is no increase in runoff." As per patch.com, "VRE's project will extend the platform so longer trains can fit. The current 380-foot platform can accommodate five-car trains for boarding and exit, so some riders have to move to different cars to exit from longer eight-car trains. The project will upgrade the current platform with a 290-foot extension to accommodate eight-car trains. VRE will also replace stairs, replace the existing canopy roof and upgrade lighting and communication systems. The project timeline calls for construction to be finished in late March 2022."
