Alexandria to recognize Indigenous Peoples Day
City officials in Alexandria have unanimously voted to recognize the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples' Day. The day, already known as Columbus Day will see the City of Alexandria joining more than 130 cities who already recognize the day as Indigenous Peoples' Day since 1994. On Indigenous Peoples' Day the city will participate in many annual celebrations with Alexandria City Public Schools being encouraged to include the teaching of Indigenous Peoples' history. Businesses, organizations and public institutions are also encouraged to recognize the day by partnering with local Native Nations. Sports Organizations are asked to stop the use of Indigenous Peoples' likeness as mascots. The City of Alexandria is focused on promoting the well being and growth of the Indigenous Community by opposing to the discrimination of these people.
