The Alexandria Police Department will be celebrating its 150th anniversary in July 2020. City Council will present a resolution recognizing the anniversary of the department. The resolution will honor one constable and sixteen police officers who died throughout the police department's history. The police department was one of the first police departments in the US to earn national accreditation in 1986.
Established on July 15, 1870 the police department became of the the region's first police department to have a canine team which was established in 1959. The technical crime scene investigative capabilities was established in the late 1920s with other departments such as interoperability radio communications (1940s), community relations team (1960s) and computer and 911 capabilities following in the 1970s and 1980s. Celebrations will be held throughout the year with a public event slated for July.
