In just a few weeks, the new coronavirus has become a serious global concern, with a death toll that keeps rising by the minute. Many efforts have been done to contain the spread, but now health experts are saying that its time to do what we can to mitigate the pandemic. Here are a few ways you can protect your home and family from the virus--and also be ready if it crops up in your community.
Stock up on supplies
Just as you would with a severe weather event, American Red Cross suggests you stock up on enough food that would last for a couple of weeks. Pantry staples like cereal, crackers, pasta, frozen veggies, and canned goods(beans, tuna) are easy to pick up and store. And, don't forget essentials such as toilet paper and detergents. Soups and Gatorade are also great additions for staying hydrated if anyone gets sick in the family. If you have a baby, ensure that you stock on enough formula and diapers.
Fight coronavirus germs at home
Researchers found that coronavirus can remain intact on surfaces for anywhere up to 72 hours. But the good news is that it can be killed by most household cleaners such as bleach, alcohol, and even plain old soap and water. So, to prevent the spread of germs and sickness in your home, make sure that you wipe your counters, doorknobs, faucets, cellphones, and other areas that usually come into contact with people's hands. And also, don't forget to frequently wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds.
Check your medicine cabinet
If you or a member of your household take a certain medication, it's always wise to ensure that you have enough in your cabinet. Also, pick up other medical basics that you might be missing including acetaminophen, ibrufen, and bandages. And don't forget to wear a mask outside the house.
Stay at home
This is one of the most effective ways of curbing your exposure to the coronavirus. Work from home if you can and avoid non-essential travels.
