I recently started volunteering as a coach for Fort Hunt Youth Basketball and I believe volunteering has some great benefits.
Friendship- When people get together, relationships are formed. After coaching a few practices, it's not uncommon for volunteers to exchange phone numbers or social media information. By giving just a small amount of time, lifetime bonds may be established.
Community- Building with your community gives a sense of pride. Whether you are volunteering at your local recreation center or at your local food kitchen, this will save money. Saving money saves resources and funds can now go toward other local improvements.
Personal Growth- Experiencing new things and environments will lead to personal growth. Skills you may not have known you had will become more apparent.
Health- Volunteering will naturally make you a more active person. Research has found that volunteering has amazing health benefits. While thinking of others, one can battle depression and social confinement.
tipClean- The most obvious is cleaning. As much as you enjoy leaving your dirty laundry scattered everywhere and the dirty dishes piled up in the sink, cleaning is unavoidable. Hiring cleaners is often the best solution. Professional cleaners will scrub and clean the places you will easily overlook. The better your property shows, the easier it will sell.
Landscaping- The yard and the exterior of your home is the first thing potential buyers will see. Removing weeds, dead branches and making sure downspouts are functioning correctly are relatively inexpensive tasks that will do wonders on the first impression of your home. If you're thinking of moving next spring, (then) this winter, you should be working on your landscaping.
Paint- Painting your home in a neutral color that appears to a broad audience will help purchasers envision themselves in your home. Auburn red might look great to you, but it has the potential to turn off buyers.
De-clutter- It might be tough to let go of some items you have lying around your home. De-cluttering your home will give the impression of more space and give a more desirable impression.

Commander James S. Ward, well known as a scholar and an authority on tactics and gunnery, was the first Union naval officer mortally wounded after the outbreak of the Civil War. Ward was well known because, among other accomplishments, he was instrumental in establishing the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland.
Fort Ward is in the West End of Alexandria
At the outbreak of the Civil War, Union commanders understood that a Confederate blockade of the Potomac was a serious threat to the main supply line for Washington, D.C. As a result, a flotilla of seven Navy vessels under the command of James Ward were dispatched to protect the waterway for shipping. In the earliest days of the war, that flotilla was involved in an action to support the strategic redeployment of a small Federal force at Mathias Point. During this action a Confederate sniper shot Ward, and he died shortly thereafter.
One of these forts was named after Commander Ward, and today Fort Ward is the best preserved of this fort system. During the war, Fort Ward was the fifth largest fort defending the Capitol and thus deterred Confederate forces who never attacked its earthen walls. The Union Army abandoned the Fort in December 1865, and shortly thereafter any salvageable materials were sold at auction.
The land is now owned by the City of Alexandria. During the time of the war, the fort was a dusty (at times muddy) place, stripped of vegetation and armed with cannons. Today, it is a manicured oasis of greenery in the city of Alexandria.
On the grounds of old Fort Ward, Fort Ward Museum and Historic Site serves as a park, educational center and cultural remembrance for those who served here. The museum has exhibits on general Civil War topics as well as interpretive programs specific to Fort Ward and Alexandria during the Union occupation. Fort Ward can be entered at 4301 West Braddock in Alexandria, Virginia.
The Fort is located relatively close to Inova Alexandria Hospital and Episcopal High School. The surrounding area is a mixture of very high end housing, middle class housing and is located not far from Skyline and the condos near I-395. To search the surrounding area check out West End Alexandria.

Alexandria City Hall was built on a site designated for the market and city hall when Alexandria was founded in 1749. The original City Hall burned in 1871 the current structure was erected in 1874. This City Hall wraps around a central courtyard known as Market Square. When first constructed Alexandria City Hall also housed a Masonic Lodge, court facility, and police and fire stations. Today, the site only has municipal offices. Over the years the building has undergone several renovations and additions. Among the most recent and was the 1960-61 addition that filled the old courtyard. At that time, the building was reoriented toward the south with the new entrance facing King Street and Market Square, an open, landscape plaza with central fountain in the current Market Square. In1981, further renovations linked the 1871 building and the 1961 addition with new elevators, stairs and corridors.
