This beautiful 19-acre site overlooking the Potomac was one of the historic forts built by the Union troops in 1863 to protect DC during the Civil War. The place was named in honor of General Charles Ferguson Smith, who died from a leg infection in 1862.

Celebrate the anniversary and honor the memory of the Female Stranger's death at Gadsby's Tavern Museum. The event will be held on October 14, 2019 and it will feature great local beers and a four course meal while learning the history surrounding the death of the Female Stranger. The Port City Brewery has crafted a special beer called the Long Black Veil Beer which was inspired by the famous tale of the Female Stranger. The Female Stranger died tragically at the Gadsby's Tavern on October 14, 1816. The event is for ages 21 and over.Continue reading
Just west of the southern extent of Crystal City, Fort Scott Park was one of the forts for the defenses of Washington during the civil war. It was named for General Winfield Scott, the then Commander-in-Chief of the Union Amy.
