Beautiful parks near Alexandria and Arlington VA

George Washington Parkway is one of the greatest attractions that can be found on the West side of the Potomac River. Stretching along from Mount Vernon Estates, it passes through Belle View and Old Town, all the way up to north of Arlington. Some of our favorite parks along GW Parkway include:
  • Theodore Roosevelt Island,
  • The LBJ National Grove,
  • Gravelly Point Park,
  • Fort Marcy,
  • Turkey Run Park

History of Mount Eagle

Kendall Perkins0415 Mount Eagle was the home of Lord Bryan Fairfax, eighth Baron of Cameron, and son of Colonel William and Deborah Clark Fairfax of Belvoir. During the Revolutionary War the Fairfax family remained loyal to the crown. Bryan Fairfax used all influence  to dissuade his friend and neighbor George Washington from taking any part against the mother country, but in spite of their difference of opinion, they always remained close friends.

Homes for Sale near Wolf Trap

Wolf Trap Early history tells that in 16th century wolves were prevalent in what is today’s Wolf Trap which compromised the safety of the community. Thus, to deal with the danger, rewards were granted for those who could trap those fierce creatures. A parcel of land in this region was purchased by Wolf Trap’s Founder, Catherine Filene Shouse who chose to preserve the name Wolf Trap. She developed the property into a farm intending to give her children solitude away from their home close to nature. Mrs. Shouse later on donated the farm to the country with her intention to have the property preserved as a park. That donation marked the birth of the nation’s first and only national park for the

Jones Point Park on Memorial Day Weekend

On Memorial Weekend 2014 my brother took me out to Jones Point Park.
An available basketball court at Jones Point Park
An available basketball court at Jones Point Park
This was my first time seeing this place since I was in High School, when I would go there to fish for catfish with chicken livers. The development since the completion of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge adds to the beauty of Alexandria. Cruising on the Mount Vernon Trail, Stuart & I took the fork in the road towards Jones Point Park, which is just after Porto Vecchio Condominiums. The other alternative fork goes across the Woodrow Wilson bridge and enters Maryland, as opposed to sticking on the Mt. Vernon Trail. The path into Jones Point Park was smoothly paved. Entering the view of the underside of the bridge was very picturesque. While Stuart stretched, I took a lap around the park and saw an open basketball court, several fishers casting out, a boat or two passing, and lots of movement from bikers, joggers, and other fitness oriented folks. Continuing in the direction of Old Town, there was another smooth paved asphalt trail that was just behind a series of luxury homes at the very end of Union St. The close proximity of it all, made for an outstanding location. The ride didn't end there, Stuart pressed on and I followed until Founders Park, which is where I threw in the towel and suggested we return home, due to my fading stamina. The way back through Jones Point Park was just as fun on the way there, especially with the lively activity going on inside.

Luckett Skate Park

Luckett Field Skate Park Luckett Field is a 5.6 acre baseball/softball field near the intersection of Duke St. and Wheeler. Part of the grounds is dedicated to the Luckett Field Skate Park. The skate park is frequented by children and adults of all ages and is considered a safe-family friendly park. The park is styled as a street course with lots of different rails. There are several quarter pipes, a 6-7 foot halfpipe. In addition to several different sized banks, there is a pyramid, kicker ramp, grind box, manual pad, and ledges. The park also has a big 3 stair set. There is no bowl. There is no admission to the park. This park doesn't require pads, but I recommend them. The skatepark is open seven days a week beginning at 9 am. The hours are seasonal, so the park will close at 5 pm through March. Skaters must be 6 years old to use the skatepark, and those under age 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Alexandria Lighthouse The park lies in the shadow of the George Washington National Masonic Memorial (aka the Alexandria Lighthouse, the Masonic Temple) in Alexandria. The skyline of Carlyle is visible from the park. There are many upscale (and a few downscale) neighborhoods very close by. Jones Point LighthouseAlthough the National Park Service owns Jones Point Park, the Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities manages the park. The parks custodians strive to preserve and showcase the 9,000 years of human history evidenced at Jones Point. Recognizable touch-points like Jones Point Lighthouse from the middle of the 19th Century are found here along with artifacts from Native Americans and colonists from the early days of European settlement. During the first World War, Jones Point was an important shipbuilding site and remnants of that abandoned heritage are unearthed for visitors to see. The survey stones placed here under the direction and guidance of George Washington after 1790 mark the original boundaries of the District of Columbia. The land which George Washington surveyed for the Federal City was within the capital boundaries for 45 years, from February 27, 1801, until September 7, 1846, when Alexandria was ceded back into Northern Virginia by Congress. Jones Point Park is very accessible for residents of Old Town Alexandria, Ford's Landing, Porto Vecchio and Bearings South.
