The Brookvalley Park which is located at 5599 Holmes Run Parkway in Alexandria is a 22 acre regional park which features the Bicentennial Tree, the oldest tree in Alexandria. The park is a natural habitat to many species of animals and its a great area for dog owners to bring their dogs for playtime and exercise. Brookvalley Park also features garden plots, playground area, picnic areas and walking/bicycle trail. Garden plots can be rented from the 4-H Club which falls under the Department of Recreational, Parks and Cultural Activities. The Holmes Run Trail runs north through the park while All Veterans Park is located southwest with Tarleton Park located southeast of the park. The day will kick start at 10 a.m. with a fast and flat run which will start in Urban Alexandria then through Cameron Run Park with the finish at the Port City Brewery. The park which is known as 'the pit' was officially opened in June 1943 and was adopted by the North Ridge Citizens Association. Helen Miller/Bernard Hunter Park is a 0.32 acres park located at 224 North Fayette Street in Old Town West Alexandria. The neighborhood park was named in honor of community activists the late Mr Bernard Hunter and Mrs Helen Miller. The park features a playground for kids,swings and a basketball court. Fort Ward was the fifth-largest fort built to protect Washington DC during the American Civil War. Fort Ward was named after the first Union naval officer to die, James Harmon Ward. The Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum was established in 1939 after the bankruptcy of the family business The Stabler Leadbeater Apothecary. The museum is located at the original site of the family business at 105-107 S. Fairfax Street in Old Town Alexandria. The family business was founded in 1792 by Edward Stabler who operated at the location until 1933 when competition and new regulations forced the company into bankruptcy. After the bankruptcy the Landmarks Society of Alexandria acquired the property and turned it into a museum for the preservation of the items which were used during the business. Continue reading
