The Barrett Library was built in 1937 and named after Kate Waller Barrett (185?-1925), to honor her memory as a humanitarian, social crusader, and political reformer. Mrs. Barrett was a very accomplished woman who received her M.D. from the Woman's Medical College of Georgia in 1892. Dr. Barrett opened a home for unwed mothers in 1893 with the financial aid of Charles Crittenton. By 1909 there were over 90 homes and national headquarters in Washington D.C. Dr. Barrett also was involved in veterans' relief, woman's suffrage, and the restoration of the Arlington Mansion.
The library renovated and expanded its facilities in 1995. The Foundation Center at Barrett Library collaborates with the Alexandria Library to strengthen the nonprofit sector with the appropriate knowledge about U.S. philanthropy and training for its patrons.
The Barrett Branch also offers the SummerQuest children's programs and “Let’s Talk Books” a Barrett book discussion group held every second Wednesday of each month at 7pm.

Millienials see a bright future.
They might be thought of as a nomadic generation unwilling to settle down, but a recent study by Prudential Real Estate reports millennials are more confident than any other age group that the real estate market will soon recover.
“There was a lot of negativity when all the problems in real estate were happening,” says Earl Lee, president and CEO of Prudential, “but this generation was either too young or too preoccupied with school at the time to notice.”
According to the study, real estate market confidence declines steadily for each successive age group. Eighty percent of 25-to-34 year olds have confidence in the market’s future, compared with 73 percent of 55-to-64 year olds who believe real estate is rebounding.
“Gen X and Gen Y are not as clued in to some of the troubles their parents have gone through in exactly the same way,” Lee says. As these younger would-be home owners enter the workforce and interact with others who own property, their desire to purchase a house increases, he adds.
This could translate into a significant spike in home sales among millennials, which would be good for themselves and the communities where they put down roots, Lee says.
"All of the monumental events that happen in a young person's life start to focus them on real estate and what it has to offer," he says. "These young generations are now all about local involvement, and what better place to do that than in a community where you own a home?"

Young couples are more often choosing the mortgage before the marriage, according to a new survey from Coldwell Banker.
Twenty-four percent of married couples surveyed aged 18-to-34 said they had purchased a home before they were married. Of married couples aged 45 and up, only 14 percent said they had purchased a house before marriage.
Unmarried couples who live in the Northeast are the most likely to buy a home together prior to marriage, according to the survey.
In the Northeast, 60 percent of those surveyed said they waited until marriage to buy a home together, compared to 72 percent in the South.
For some young couples, buying a home together has become “the new engagement ring,” says Dr. Robi Ludwig, a psychotherapist and Coldwell Banker’s “lifestyle correspondent.” Millennials “know that they have an opportunity here, with low mortgage rates and low housing prices. And they think, ‘We’re moving toward marriage anyway, so let’s buy.’”
Some are even choosing to bypass the fancy wedding and honeymoon and save up for a downpayment instead, Ludwig says.
Couples are finding they can learn a lot about their future spouse when buying a home first, including about one another’s finances and even how many kids the other wants one day, since that often comes into play in finding a suitable size and style of home.
“It’s easy for couples to not think or talk about these things, but they’re forced to once mortgages and banks are involved,” Ludwig says.

River Farm is on Virginia's side of the Potomac River in Fairfax County just south of Alexandria. Originally together with nearby Collingwood, River Farm was a sprawling farm that was one of five farms that compromised George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate. Today, River Farm is twenty five acres of meadows, woods and landscaped gardens.
The gardens bloom all year from the daffodils and lilacs in early spring to the cherries and dogwoods of late spring. Magnolias in the early summer give way to the Crepe Myrtles in later summer. The asters of fall herald the brilliant fall foliage that promises a winter of holly and persimmon. The woods and river banks of River Farm provide habitat for many birds, including bald eagles and ospreys, as well as animals as small as lizards and as big as deer.
These and many other plantings make River Farm an excellent destination for a one day outing but also a lovely place to host an event. River Farm is open to the public from 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday, excluding national holidays. In addition, from early April through September 25 River Farm is open on Saturdays from 9 am to 1pm. River Farm organizes special events and children's programs throughout the year. River Farm's ballroom, patios and gardens are a great place for a spring wedding or corporate get-away.

A survey of Canadian home owners finds that smoking in the home can reduce the home’s value at resale by up to 29 percent. The potential loss on a home could be up to $107,000 on the average home price of $369,000 in Ontario, according to the study sponsored by Pfizer Canada, a pharmaceutical company.
Fifty-six percent of the real estate agents and brokers included in the survey said most buyers are turned off by a home where the home owners have smoked. Twenty-seven percent say that buyers are unwilling to even consider a home in which the home owners smoked.
“Many prospective buyers are really put off by homes that have been smoked in and they can be very challenging to sell," says David Visentin, a real estate professional and co-host of the W Network's "Love it or List it" program.
