607 Cameron Street in Old Town Alexandria, in 1926

Here's another blast from Old Town Alexandria's past. This picture from 1926 shows 607 Cameron Street. The stately vehicle out front reminds one of the SUV's that are popular today.

Fort Hunt Road, in 1955

vintage photo
Ladies waiting on Fort Hunt Rd, for the Fairfax County bookmobile
This is an interesting photo for a number of reasons. Firstly, I can't help but notice that something in the distance has caught the full attention of the dogs. Are the dogs a pug and a great dane? The child in the stroller is bundled up and braced for cold. The little red wagon is loaded full of books and another lady carries an armful of books. In the days before 100 cable channels and the Internet and video games and mobile phones and more, we read just a bit more. I'd like to know exactly where this is on Fort Hunt Road. It looks a bit like the foot of Belle Haven, which would make the empty field Olde Belhaven Towne. But the hill doesn't look quite right for that location.

What is the “Main Street” of Southern Fairfax County?

A 1960 view of Route One
A 1960 view of Route One
Southern Fairfax County is located just south of Old Town Alexandria between the Beltway and the Potomac River. Although Rose Hill and Franconia and Springfield are in southern Fairfax County, when most folks think of South County, they think of New Alexandria, Groveton, Woodlawn, Mount Vernon and Lorton. When you think of that part of the county there is only one road that could really qualify as "Main Street."  Franconia Road and Telegraph Road and even the GW Parkway run long stretches through Southern Fairfax County, but Main Street would have to be Rt. 1.

Tips for searching by zip code

Carlyle Towers

There are a few key concepts that any prospective purchaser should know when seeking real estate by zip code:
  1. ZIP Codes are categories for grouping mailing addresses and are not exact geographic regions.
  2. The centroid of a ZIP Code may be in one County and the associated city/town in another.
  3. In rural areas, a single ZIP Code may be used for cities and towns in several different Counties / Independent Cities.
  4. ZIP Code “areas” can overlap, be subsets of each other, or be artificial constructs with no geographic area.
  5. ZIP Codes are only loosely tied to cities.

What is a “Federal” style home?

Ubiquitous up and down the East Coast, Federal-style architecture dates from the late 1700s and coincided with a reawakening of interest in classical Greek and Roman culture. Builders began to add swags, garlands, elliptical windows, and other decorative details to rectangular Georgian houses. The style that emerged resembles Georgian, but is more delicate and more formal. Many Federal-style homes have an arched Palladian window on the second story above the front door. The front door usually has sidelights and a semicircular fanlight.

In some parts of the country, Federal-style homes are often called "Adam" after the English brothers who popularized the style. The Federal-style can be found in parts of Old Town Alexandria VA.

Snow on the Courtyard at Montebello

snow on the courtyard
Snow on the Montebello courtyard
They called it "Snowmageddon".  I can remember snow storms like this in Virginia, but that was more than 30 years ago.  It will probably be 30 years before we see snow like this again.  Three weeks after the storm the courtyard at Montebello still was covered in snow, but it made a very pleasant site from a balcony at Montebello.

Gothic Revival

Gothic Revival
The influence of English romanticism and the mass production of elaborate wooden millwork after the Industrial Revolution fueled the construction of Gothic Revival homes in the mid-1800s. These picturesque structures are marked by "Gothic" windows with distinctive pointed arches; exposed framing timbers; and steep, vaulted roofs with cross-gables. Extravagant features may include towers and verandas. Ornate wooden detailing is generously applied as gable, window, and door trim. American architects Alexander Jackson Davis and Andrew Jackson Downing championed Gothic in domestic buildings in the 1830s. Most Gothic Revival homes were constructed between 1840 and 1870 in the Northeast.
