Fort Scott Park Is a historic site

Fort Scott Park
Fort Scott Park is located south west of Crystal City not far from Pentagon City and Aurora Hills in Arlington VA. Fort Scott Park is one of several parks in Northern Virginia that were part of the defenses of Washington during the civil war.  The sign at the site reads:

Historical Site Defenses of Washington 1861 - 1865 Fort Scott Here stood a detached lunette constructed in May 1861 to guard the south flank of the defenses of Washington and named for General Winfield Scott, then General-in-chief of the army. It was subsequently relegated to an interior position by the construction of defenses of Alexandria about 1 3/4 miles to the West. The fort had a perimeter of 313 yards and emplacements for 8 guns. A remnant portion may be found immediately to the West.

Today, Fort Scott Park is more than 11 and a half acres of family-friendly fun that welcomes toddlers and children. Fort Scott Park features appealing playground equipment like a sandbox, a playhouse, and both baby and regular swings. The park has nice shade and picnic pavilions. The adjacent basketball court is a great place to let dad make some free throws.  The park also has tennis courts and softball fields.

Where is Arlington Ridge Road?

Hume School in Arlington VA
Hume School is now a museum about Arlington past.
Arlington Ridge Road traces the crest of Arlington Ridge, a steep rise of land that parallels the Potomac in Virginia.  This the same geographic feature that creates the bluffs in Mclean and the rise of land through Arlington National Cemetery. Throughout Northern Virginia, this rise of land is home to some of the most desirable land in the Metro area and the neighborhood around Arlington Ridge Road is no exception. Residences here have easy access to DC, Arlington and Alexandria because of both the road network and the neighborhood itself. In addition to easy access to thoroughfares like Rt. 1, I-395 and Army Navy Drive, this old neighborhood has plenty of back streets and cross-streets to help avoid trouble when things back up. In addition because this is an older neighborhood, it's generally very low density. The homes in this neighborhood often have sweeping lawns with mature and towering hardwoods.  Many of these homes were built as summer get-aways for old-time Washington DC. Some were not much more than simple cottages. Some are spacious lodges. Many of these homes have had extensive renovations and additions. A good many have been replaced entirely by stately manor homes that speak to the affluence and prestige of this community.

The real estate here is among the priciest in Northern Virginia, but if you're seeking convenience, elegance and a quiet neighborhood, it's really tough to beat Arlington Ridge.

Tips for searching by zip code

Carlyle Towers
Brick driveway of Carlyle Towers
There are a few key concepts that any prospective purchaser should know when seeking real estate by zip code:
  1. ZIP Codes are categories for grouping mailing addresses and are not exact geographic regions.
  2. The centroid of a ZIP Code may be in one County and the associated city/town in another.
  3. In rural areas, a single ZIP Code may be used for cities and towns in several different Counties / Independent Cities.
  4. ZIP Code “areas” can overlap, be subsets of each other, or be artificial constructs with no geographic area.
  5. ZIP Codes are only loosely tied to cities.

Why are People Flocking to Fairfax County?

Did you know that this booming metropolitan county exceeds the total population of seven American states and is the most populous region among city areas in not only Virginia, but also Washington? In fact, Fairfax County is home to a whopping 13% of its state’s total population.
map of districts
Fairfax County districts
What is it about this Northern Virginian county that caused an estimate of 1,015,302 (as of the April 2008 consensus) to make this part of the country their dwelling place? Formed in 1742 from the northern part of Prince William County, and named after Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron, this county is bordered by Potomac River and friendly neighboring regions such as Arlington County, Alexandria, Falls Church, Loudoun County and Prince William County. Studies conducted have shown that most of the adult citizens, who call Fairfax County their home, are four-year college degree holders and a good number of them have reached even higher educational attainment. Research has also shown that, aside from being the first county in the US to achieve a median household income of six figures, Fairfax also has the second highest median household income (next to Loudoun County) among counties with 250,000 or more residents. With those statistics in mind, potential residents can have some level of assurance that they are living among some of the best citizens the nation has to offer. It can also be a plus that they’ll be able to rub elbows with the county’s upper class society.

Think of Nesbitt Realty if you need to buy or sell real estate in Fairfax County

Aside from that, Fairfax offers people, who are considering the county as their abode, residential areas that will surely fit their unique tastes and preferences. Residential communities like Kingstowne and Burke can give the suburban comfort and security that citizens may be looking for. Meanwhile, areas like Vienna, Huntington or the inner Beltway bustle of Bailey’s Crossroads can offer the convenient accessibility and metropolitan flair required by those more accustomed to a fast-paced, urbanite lifestyle.

With all that Fairfax County has to offer, no wonder people are rushing in to make it their home!

About Contemporary styled homes

You know them by their odd-sized and often tall windows, their lack of ornamentation, and their unusual mixtures of wall materials--stone, brick, and wood, for instance.
Single-family house at 3435 Roberts Ln, Arlington, VA 22207
Single-family house at Bellevue Forest is in Arlington 22207
Architects designed Contemporary-style homes (in the Modern family) between 1950 and 1970, and created two versions: the flat-roof and gabled types. The latter is often characterized by exposed beams. Both breeds tend to be one-story tall and were designed to incorporate the surrounding landscape into their overall look. In Northern Virginia, one of my favorite contemporary neighborhoods is Hollin Hills, located just off Fort Hunt Road in Alexandria's Mount Vernon District. The homes here feature contemporary lines and floor to ceiling windows in an "urban forest".  That is to say Hollin Halls feels like deep woods despite being just a mile or so from the City of Alexandria.

Virginia at a Glance: Weather, Climate, and Seasons

flag
Nesbitt Realty is licensed in Virginia.
The Commonwealth of Virginia is privileged to have a temperate climate, moderate rainfall, and a rich and fertile landscape. Although the late summer months (particularly August) are known for the intense humidity and the winter months (particularly February) regularly experience significant snowfall; these extremes in both temperature and weather ensure that Virginians enjoy all four seasons of each calendar year to their fullest potential. Virginia has five distinct climate regions including: Tidewater, Piedmont, Northern Virginia, Western Mountain and Southwestern Mountain. The topography and climate of Virginia is largely the result of its geographic location, situated between the Blue Ridge Mountain Range and the Chesapeake Bay. Each diverse climate region provides an extensive array of plant varieties and vegetation, which helps to create a unique microclimate and ecosystem in each location. Temperature, rainfall, and wind are the most important aspects of climate and weather patterns, with temperature being the most critical. Although the climate and temperature of Virginia varies according to location, it generally becomes increasingly warm farther to the South. Most of the state has a humid, subtropical climate stretching from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Southern Shenandoah Valley. There is wide variation in average temperatures across the Commonwealth, affecting everything from the natural growing season to a family's heating and cooling costs. Thunderstorms are a regular occurrence throughout the year, particularly in the western part of the state with an annual average of 35−45 days of thunderstorm activity. Meanwhile, cold air masses arriving from the Blue Ridge Mountains, especially during the winter, can lead to significant snowfall and ice storms from early November to mid-March. Spring brings wildflowers and moderate temperatures but also harbors a palpable increase in tree pollen at the beginning of April. Wildflowers in the mountains tend to peak throughout the month of May, while other local flora and fauna can bloom as late as mid-September. Finally, the summer months usually hold an average temperature ranging from 70-88 degrees, but because of the area's humid and subtropical climate, a typical summer day can feel significantly hotter. Each distinct region of Virginia welcomes visitors to a wide range of outdoor activities that can be enjoyed throughout every season such as skiing in the mountains during the winter or playing golf in the valley during the summer. Other activities such as hiking, bicycling and camping are year-round for Virginians, and the coastal regions provide plenty of opportunity for water sports as well.

French Provincial style

Houses with garage
Kingstowne is in Alexandria VA
Balance and symmetry are the ruling characteristics of this formal style. Homes are often brick with detailing in copper or slate. Windows and chimneys are symmetrical and perfectly balanced, at least in original versions of the style. Defining features include a steep, high, hip roof; balcony and porch balustrades; rectangle doors set in arched openings; and double French windows with shutters. Second-story windows usually have a curved head that breaks through the cornice. The design had its origins in the style of rural manor homes, or chateaus, built by the French nobles during the reign of Louis XIV in the mid-1600s. The French Provincial design was a popular Revival style in the 1920s and again in the 1960s. French Provincial revivals can be found in upscale neighborhoods throughout Northern Virginia.
