Reston Opportunity for Options

Reston has been an up and coming city in Fairfax county over the last few years.  The growth it has experienced has given buyers plenty of room to decided what kind of home best meets their need.  Whether you want a neighborhood or city experience.  Reston has definitely got whatever you need.  It has tried to meet he needs of their community by adding several shopping centers and has quickly become one of the premier places to shop, dine, and socialize amongst Northern Virginians. Reston Town Center is located in the hear of city and quite frankly you can drive for several blocks and find something to interest you or your family.  Right around the block from Reston Town Center is another shopping center that offers access to stores like Best Buy, Lane Bryant, Barne's & Nobles, and Men's Warehouse.  There are grocery stores integrated in these shopping centers as well like Harris Teeter.  What's nice is that all of this action is surrounded by quiet neighborhoods of condos, townhomes, or single family homes. Commuters will also be pleased by the ability to get to the metro quickly when trying to beat the morning rush.  Reston straddles the Dulles Toll Road so you never have to worry about getting in and out of the city.  In all honesty, I could go on and on about all that Reston has to offer.  It is one of those places you have to see and experience to understand.  Reston has a lot opportunity for a lot of buyers, it just depends on what your're looking for.

Reston Waterpark

I can think of a number of things my children prefer to do when the weather starts to get warmer.   However, since learning how to swim the first thing they ask is to go swimming.  I wasn’t all that familiar with my options and the fortunate thing is that many of the subdivisions around here come with clubhouses and swimming pools.  Unfortunately, even that can get old to kids.  I took a friend up on a suggestion to try a local waterpark in Reston.   We had several to choose from and decided to give Water Mine a try. Upon arrival, it was surprising that in a seemingly regular neighborhood a waterpark existed.  We drove down this road that looks like we were going into the woods and up popped this waterpark.  Obviously with all the screaming my kids were doing, they were definitely excited.  We found a place to park and were happy that even though we forgot to pack a lunch they had a concession stand that offered all types of goodies to eat.  The pricing was very reasonable and it was a beautiful day to take advantage of the all-day ticket.  They had several slide options and the park was arranged in to sections suitable for certain ages. We stayed for a few hours and decided to head home.  I asked my kids if they would like to come back and they were excited at just the thought of returning.  Although we are still hanging on to the last remnants of Winter, it is good to know that you have options when swimsuit weather returns and you don’t have to go far to enjoy it.

Reston Town Center

I went here over the weekend and was pleasantly surprised at how much there is to do in such a small area.  Reston Town Center is situated right off the Dulles Toll Road and hidden behind some pretty tall office buildings.  Your first impression would make you think you were in a major officeplex that is designated just for businesses.  In any case, walking up and down the street was pretty impressive.  I spoke to a few people along the way and they said that it was a beautiful place to come during the holiday season.  They have an ice skating rink that is open during the winter season and it ends around mid-March.  Although, I’m not one for skating, the fact that it was outdoors appealed to me. I enjoyed the outdoor shopping experience.  We decided to get a bite to eat and settled on eating at Jackson’s Mighty Fine Food.  I liked the décor of the restaurant and it seemed extremely warm and inviting.  The hostess was real nice and it wasn’t too crowded when we went, so they were extremely attentive.  The menu was uncomplicated and I like how you weren’t overwhelmed with choices.  We started off with a cocktail which was delish.  Since we were starving, I skipped the appetizer and went right for the main course.  I decided on their grouper on top of a cauliflower mash.  The funny thing is that I hate cauliflower!  However, I didn’t even think it was cauliflower, since it appeared like mashed potatoes. It was the best vegetable I had eaten in a long time.  We finished our dining experience with their white chocolate bread pudding.  Let me pause for a moment and have a moment of silence……..for the best desert I believe ever existed in a chain restaurant.  Maybe it was the way the caramel puddled in the center of the mini Bundt cake?  Or perhaps the vanilla bean ice cream melted on the side since the desert is served warm.  In any case, it was an out of this world experience.  OMG, how could I forget the complementary bread basket we received at the beginning of the meal?  It was simply awesome.  Needless to say we left there completely stuffed and satisfied with the $90 bill we received. We left the restaurant and continued our stroll.  People seemed to be pretty excited about what the little strip had to offer and they had every reason to be.  If you are ever in the area and need some place new to try or experience, I would suggest giving Reston Town Center a go.

Wiehle Avenue Metro Station

You're invited to give feedback on future land-use near proposed Wiehle Avenue Metro Station

As you may know the new Silver Line is being planned to take commuters from Reston/Herndon into the City.  The Wiehle Metro Station will be located just west of Tyson's Corner at Weihle Avenue.  Planners and adminstrators have invited the public to offer input about the land-use around the proposed station on March 20, at 9 a.m. The public workshop will be held at the Langston Hughes Middle School cafeteria, 11401 Ridge Heights Road, Reston. The draft agenda for this workshop is available online. The goal of this development is to take advantage of proximity to Metro while preserving nearby neighborhoods. The Reston Master Plan Task Force will develop recommendations for future land use for the Dulles Corridor. This includes the areas around the future Wiehle Avenue, Reston Parkway and Herndon-Monroe Metro stations, as well as Reston Town Center. Community workshops will be conducted for each of these areas, so the public can offer their input. Public hearings also will be held later this year on the overall recommendations for the corridor. The task force is scheduled to present its recommendations this summer and they will be sent to the Fairfax County Planning Commission for review this fall. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will then vote on whether to include the recommendations in the Comprehensive Plan for the corridor. Materials from previous workshops are available online. For more information or reasonable ADA accommodations, contact Sandi Smith, Fairfax County Department of Planning and Zoning, at 703-324-1239, TTY 711 or [email protected].
