Mount Vernon Yacht Club in the snow

What to do When it Snows

Many places in this country boast wonderful winter time activities and Northern Virginia is no exception.  When the snow falls or when the temps get so low that lakes and rivers freeze, what can you do to enjoy this outdoor wonder? If you simply want to enjoy some of the many wonderful hills here in Virginia, head to this site and pick up a new sled. http://www.sledriding.com/sledreviews/sledreviews.html Then, finding a hill in this part of the country isn't tough, but for suggestions, I have included a link to help:https://modernreston.com/2015/02/two-of-the-best-places-for-sledding-in-reston/ Just in case the sledding isn't your cup of iced tea, I have another suggestion.  Ice skating is a great way to burn off calories and have fun at the same time.  Here are some ideas for locations to knock out both of these:http://www.virginia.org/IceSkating/?adref=blog1213WinterBreak Get out and enjoy the winter time.  And, if you are in the market for that new place to call home this time of year, look below for some ideas. A Few Things to do Before the Snow Comes

Are you ready for the white fluffy stuff?   We all have opinions on the existence of snow, but few of us know how and when to react to it coming down.  Now is the time to think about it, before it's too late. The leaves are falling and some trees are all but totally bare.  The ground is not cold yet, but it surely is full of leaves.  The views 9A6F29A2-13C6-4854-91D4-7337CC3F013Fthat this gives us are spectacular, especially in this part of the country.  Virginia is beautiful anytime of year, but when the leaves fall, the views of mountains and valleys are simply amazing. Now that the leaves are all but off their branches, it's almost time for the snow to bless us with its' presence.  Some places get more snow than others, but one thing is true about anywhere in this country when the cold hits - water doesn't flow if it's too cold.  Why does this matter?  It matters, because the valves that currently have hoses hooked up to them need to be shut off and shut off from a valve inside if possible.  If the only thing you can do is shut the water off outside, make sure to take the hose disconnected from the valve.  This will help prevent damage to the valve.  One other thing to do here is go to a hardware store and buy a cover for the valve.  This will keep the temperature from getting too cold and may even prevent cracked pipes. The next thing to do just before the snow comes is to clean up the yard.  The kids, no doubt, have left some small surprises for you to find.  The last thing you want to do is twist an ankle on a toy when you have to walk through the snow to find the newspaper or just to enjoy the quiet sound of falling snow.1DFD2685-31AF-4C80-8F18-920579851894.full Lastly, please find the snow shovel and put it in a place where it can actually be useful.  I am amazed at the amount of people who find themselves needing to buy a new shovel every year, because they lost the old one. Now you're ready for the days of 16"-24", only to see the same thing two days later. Is is time to move into your new home, just before the winter hits?  Follow the guide below and check out the listings as well.

Snow on the Courtyard at Montebello

snow on the courtyard
Snow on the Montebello courtyard
They called it "Snowmageddon".  I can remember snow storms like this in Virginia, but that was more than 30 years ago.  It will probably be 30 years before we see snow like this again.  Three weeks after the storm the courtyard at Montebello still was covered in snow, but it made a very pleasant site from a balcony at Montebello.

Early Spring in the Courtyard

Courtyard at the Royalton
Sunny days are coming
The courtyard of the Royalton is a great place to find some sun in early Spring. Royalton isn't the only condo in our area with a nice courtyard though. Carlyle Square, the Palazzo at Center Park, the Plaza and Torpedo Factory are just a few of the places with great courtyards.

Did we get any snow?

Did we get any snow during the "Blizzard of '09"? I'll say ...
Julie and I went outside during the storm, just to walk around a bit. Foxy didn't seem to be having as much fun as we were having. Maybe that was because her feet couldn't touch the ground. She stuck pretty close as we walked around the house. I told Julie, "Remember this fall when I saw the fuzzy caterpillar?" She did remember that fuzzy caterpillar. My grandfather was a wealth of folk wisdom and he once told me that when the fuzzy caterpillars have 2 blacks and an orange that means we'll have a cold winter. (Of course, two oranges and a brown mean we'll have a mild winter.) Well, so far, the caterpillar called it right this year. He had two thick black bands and we've had a pretty cold winter.

Lake Fairfax is one of Northern Virginia's best recreational assets and a treat for those who live in the urban forest surrounding this body of water.  Here are few pictures taken nearby after the recent snow. Are you looking for a home with a view like this?

During the great snowstorm of December 2009, WMATA closed all outdoor metro stations for fear that the snow was higher than the electrified third rail of the track. Here's a few properties currently for sale at the King Street Metro in Alexandria VA.
