What is a Little Theatre of Alexandria production like?

I was very satisfied with my purchase, after attending my first play at the Little Theatre of Alexandria. Originally, I planned on getting the family together to see their Christmas holiday production, but tickets were sold out when I looked. A few months later, the idea of seeing a production at LTA was still in my mind. I took the series of sold out plays that I had seen on their website, when searching for tickets, as an indicator of LTA's quality. I got a friend to join and got our tickets (which cost about 1/4 of the price of a Shakespeare Theatre Company ticket) a couple months in

advance, from a friendly box office attendant named Tina. Next time, I might have to inquire about the volunteer opportunities I saw posted on their website.

A few months later, and it was time for my friend and I to go see a play called Proof. Pulling up to the LTA (i.e. 600 Wolfe St, Alexandria VA, 22314) 20 minutes early, I paid attention to the pleasant surrounding neighborhood. To be quite honest, I usually associated Wolfe St with the parking lot that was unlimited after a certain hour, on the waterfront that I used to use when I worked one of my first jobs in Old Town as a High Schooler. Back to the subject of LTA, my friend commented that she was surprised that their was a theatre mixed in with a neighborhood of townhouses. Stepping inside from the rainy Spring weather, I got our tickets from the box office. Next, I picked up some LTA literature, along with the evenings program, to read while I waited in the banquet hall for my friend to arrive. I read that the cast and crew had very experienced and relevant backgrounds. Also, I was happy to find a 20 percent off coupon advertisement for Union St. Pub. When I met with my friend and we took our seats I found out why its called the LTA, it was small! This wasn't a bad thing though, it was just very close and intimate. To give you an idea of how close my seats were to the show, I literally heard the smack of the actors lips, during a kissing scene. After watching a 2 hour play with a 15 minute intermission in the middle, my friend and I parted ways. The LTA location was prime for either continuing the evening at one of the many nearby options (e.g. Southside, or something along King St. or Union St.) or just returning home, depending on where you live, with there being several nearby neighborhoods (e.g. Torpedo Factory, the Henry, Powtowmack Crossing, Belle View, Belle Haven, Ford's Landing, Porto Vecchio, etc) to chose from. The Alexandria Little Theatre is a great place for theater fans and tourists alike. With shows such as “Move Over, Mrs. Markham”, “Hairspary”, “Rabbit Hole”,
The Little Alexandria Theatre in the Evening
“Noises Off”, “A Christmas Carol”, “All the Kings Women”, and “A Streetcar Named Desire”, this cozy theater offers a nice local getaway or activity. The theater also offers acting classes and is run partially by volunteers. Tickets are available online. The Little Theatre of Alexandria is the oldest award winning community theatre in the Washington metro area and one of the many community theatres in the country. It was founded by Mary Lindsey in 1934 as a small play-reading group formerly known as the Peacock Players that then showcased over 300 productions since then along with over 2000 member base.

Productions were once held at Gadsby’s Tavern acting during the 18th century. The Little Theatre of Alexandria ceased operations during the war in the 1940’s but then resumed in 1945 and then relocated in 1950 at the corner of Wolfe and St. Asaph Street by renting the land from the City of Alexandria for $1 a year and was able to purchase the land soon after in 1970. On November 18, 1961, Little Theatre of Alexandria was completed with many additions to the single building months after.

Capitol Steps

Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them.

In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom ("Don't quit your day job!"), and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience.

Arena Stage

The core purpose of Arena Stage is to produce huge plays of all that is passionate, exuberant, profound, deep and dangerous in the American spirit. Arena has broad shoulders and a capacity to produce anything from vast epics to charged dramas to robust musicals. Our focus is on theater of the Americas; we produce American classics, premieres of new plays and contemporary stories. Our Arena is a forum, a coliseum, a place for audiences to argue, discuss and meet each other over the theatrical divide. At the center is art; all other programs thrive in concentric circles supporting the art.

Wolf Trap

As America's National Park for the Performing Arts, Wolf Trap plays a valuable leadership role in both the local and national performing arts communities. Through a wide range of artistic and education programs, Wolf Trap enhances our nation's cultural life and ensures that the arts remain accessible and affordable to the broadest possible audience.

Touring Kennedy Center productions and its television, radio, and Internet broadcasts reach millions around the world. As part of the Kennedy Center's Performing Arts for Everyone outreach program, hundreds of free performances are offered each year featuring national and local artists; these include early-evening concerts on the Millennium Stage, dozens of performances during the annual Open House Arts Festival, and daily concerts of seasonal music in December as part of Holidays at the Kennedy Center. Since 1999, the Millennium Stage performances have been broadcast live over the Internet and digitally archived on the Kennedy Center's website.

The Shakespeare Theatre

Since its founding in 1985, The Shakespeare Theatre has endeavored to be the nation's leading force in the presentation and preservation of classic theatre. Our core mission is to present classic theatre in an accessible, skillful, imaginative, American style that honors playwrights' language and intentions while viewing their plays through a 21st-century lens. With the formation of the Harman Center for the Arts---which includes the new Sidney Harman Hall and the existing Lansburgh Theatre---the Shakespeare Theatre Company will become a national destination theatre offering a broad range of works to audiences in the greater-Washington area and across the nation.

Fords Theatre

Fords Theatre is a live, working theatre located in downtown Washington, DC. As a national historic and cultural site welcoming visitors from across the nation, Ford's Theatre blends its rich history with performance excellence in serving as a living tribute to President Lincoln's love of the performing arts. When Ford's Theatre re-opened its doors in 1968 --after having been closed 103 years --it truly was reclaimed as a national treasure for all Americans, and those of us who work here are mindful of that legacy and grateful that Ford's Theatre once again is a vibrant showcase for the performing arts that President Lincoln so appreciated.

Performance Art at the Artisphere

Visiting the Artisphere in Rosslyn was very enjoyable. I was there to see Kaki King, a critically acclaimed female guitarist. Taking the some what spiral stairs past the lounge, and up to the second floor was neat. There were a few art related quotes to read from the walls display, as well as a series of artistic photographs streaming from a projector onto a wall. Entering the Dome Theatre, there were steep seats which created an immediate intimate closeness with the stage. Looking up, the spherical shape of the Dome Theatre reminded me of a planetarium. During the performance everything was very professional, there were perfectly timed lights and video that corresponded with the acoustic-electric guitar's rhythms & progressions & physical movements which were a part of King's kickstarter. During a pausing moment, Kaki King told the audience that this was her third performance of the nights entertainment, entitled 'the Neck is a Bridge to the Body.' Overall, I found the music and video to be soothing and cerebral. Afterwards, I left for the Orange line metro station two blocks away, still thinking about the sounds and pictures that I had seen earlier that evening. The Artisphere is the result of 40 years of community desire culminating with a public & private partnership with Arlington County & Rosslyn Business Improvement District and Monday Properties.
