Explore The World Of Archaeology At The Alexandria Archaeology Museum

The Alexandria Archaeology Museum is located on the third floor of the Torpedo Factory Art Center at 105 N Union Street n Old Town Alexandria. The museum features exhibits which shows the process of Archaeology and the latest artifacts found in Alexandria. The museum offer hands on activities for kids and adults to experience the Art of Archaeology. Through the museum, The City of Alexandria along with archaeologists and students work with residents to study and manage aspects of archaeology which is important to Alexandria's history. The Alexandria Archaeology Museum main exhibit, A Community Digs Its Past: The Lee Street Site uses the excavation of a city block to explore the steps of archaeology. It shows a cross section of Alexandria's history from when it was founded in 1749 to the 20th century. The exhibit tells the story of where eighteenth century wharves, nineteenth century bakery, a tavern, shops and residences on the waterfront as well as a hospital for soldiers who were injured during the Civil War. During a visit to the Museum on Fridays persons will be able to witness volunteers washing, marking and cataloging artifacts which were recently found or working on artifacts found during the past thirty years. After cleaning and cataloging the artifacts they are stored at the Museum for exhibition or they are sent for special conversation treatments at external labs. The Museum offers adults and kids the opportunity to experience archaeology first hand with hands on activities through its Alexandria Adventure Lessons. The Museum is open to the public from Tuesdays - Sundays.
