Bike to Work Day Celebrated Its 20th Anniversary

May is National Bike to Work Week, and this year, Bike to Work Day celebrated its 20th Anniversary. Countless cyclists pedaled the W&OD Trail into the Town of Herndon, one of over more than 100 regional pit stops. Most cyclists either resided in the town, like David Agland, or arrived in Herndon from areas to the west like a group of six riders from Ashburn and Leesburg. Continue reading

Southgate Community Center In Reston To Be Renamed

Southgate Community Center in Reston may be getting a new name soon. Fairfax CountySupervisor Walter L. Alcorn (D-Hunter Mill District) presented a Board Matter at the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Meeting of May 4 that staff from the Department of Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) work with the community to rename Southgate Community Center in recognition of Supervisor Catherine M. Tour de Hunter Mill Starts In Hunter Mill District

Cyclists of all abilities gathered early Saturday morning, May 15, at Reston Community Center for the inaugural Tour de Hunter Mill. Organized by the Hunter Mill District, Fairfax Alliance for Better Bicycling (FABB), and Reston Bike Club (RBC), the event showcased “Unity in our Community.” Gulu Gambhir and Rhonda Van Diest of Vienna readied themselves for the ride and appeared delighted to be there. The McLean Farmers Market At Lewinsville Park Opens

The McLean Farmers Market at Lewinsville Park, 1659 Chain Bridge Road, opened for the second day of its weekly spring to late fall season on Friday, May 15, from 8 a.m. to noon. Operated by Fairfax County Park Authority, co-market manager Bill Smith said the McLean Market has one of the longest run histories in the county. “We have some vendors that have been here all along,” Smith said, referencing Sharkawi Farm in Fauquier County. Turning Point Suffragist Memorial Officially Dedicated In Fairfax County

A memorial honoring the women who fought for their right to vote was dedicated in Fairfax County, Virginia, on Sunday. The Turning Point Suffragist Memorial aims to tell the entire seven-decade story of the suffrage movement. A major feature is a commemorative wall. “It lists the nearly 100 suffragists who were imprisoned in 1917,” said Nancy Lyons Sargeant, chair of the memorial’s association at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Mental Health Awareness Month Kicks Off With A New Charitable Event

Kicking off Mental Health Awareness Month, a new golf tournament hosted by Alliance Executive Search and CBRE on May 3 raised more than $26,000 to benefit PRS, a leading behavioral health nonprofit serving Northern Virginia. More than 72 golfers participated in the tournament. Held at Westwood Golf Club in Vienna, the event featured 18 holes, a cocktail reception, and speakers, including a PRS client, who discussed his struggle and recovery. Continue reading
