Capital One Hall opened earlier this month with star-studded concerts in Tysons, Virginia. This weekend, it kicks off Broadway musicals with “Waitress” on Friday through Sunday. Based on the 2007 film by Adrienne Shelly and adapted by Jessie Nelson (book) and pop star Sara Bareilles (music, lyrics), the 2016 Broadway show earned four Tony nominations, including Best Musical, and might have won if it weren’t for a little show called “Hamilton.” Continue reading

City Jobs Becomes International Model Against Homelessness

The Lamb Center’s City Jobs program has received accolades since its inception nearly three years ago. And now, it’s receiving international recognition as a model for fighting homelessness, thanks to the Voice of America (VOA). A daytime, drop-in shelter, The Lamb Center in Fairfax City provides food, clothing, showers, laundry services and spiritual guidance for the homeless. But it wanted to do more; and in November 2018, City Jobs – a partnership between this nonprofit and the City of Fairfax – was born. Continue reading

Northern Virginia’s outdoor, walk-thru haunting tradition returns at the Workhouse’s annual “Haunt.” This year’s all new version is “The Collection.”  This year’s Haunt immerses guests in a highly-themed walk-through experience with creepy characters delivering contactless scares in multiple scenes. Guests will travel about the Workhouse campus to rarely visited areas in small groups for a 30-minute experience of abandoned, historic buildings and into the night-time woods. Continue reading

Mount Vernon Sees Fence Removal, Openning Oppurtunities

A fence came down in an area of Hybla Valley recently that was a barrier for people in the Audubon mobile home community area to shop for their families. The fence was put in place years ago by the police to separate the trailer community, Colchester Town Condominiums, Creekside Apartments and the Mount Vernon Tennis Club. It divided people and it created a long walk to get to the store. Continue reading

10 Years Of Washington West Film Festival In Northern Virginia Venues

The Washington West Film Festival had to postpone last year due to the pandemic. Now, it’s roaring back to life to celebrate its 10th festival this Thursday through Monday. “We’re super excited,” Founder Brad Russell told WTOP. “Last year was super tough for everybody, including us. We weighed out virtual and all the options and decided it would just be best to punt to 2021. … Here we are! Money Raised By Chamber Golf Classic For Scholarships

Local business and community leaders gathered at Laurel Hill Golf Club on Sept. 22 for the 23rd Annual Chamber Golf Classic hosted by Mount Vernon Lee Chamber of Commerce to raise money for the Chamber’s Scholarship Fund. Winning the competitive field was the team from Genuario Construction Co. with Rick Genuario, Sue Genuario, Robert Hines, and Dick Alderson.
