City councils in Alexandria have approved the changes to Seminary Road by reducing one traffic lane and adding a bike lane in each direction with a center turn lane serving both directions. The decision to make the changes to the road way was met with mixed reactions from residents and 13 civic associations in Alexandria. The Alexandria Traffic and Parking Board recommended that the city maintained four lanes with two pedestrian signals. The changes known as a "road diet" will come into effect by the end of October. Capital Bikeshare will be offering free unlimited passes for 30 minute bike rides in Alexandria. The free passes will be offered in celebration of the company's ninth anniversary which will be on Friday September 20th. The company offers bike rentals at over 550 stations in Alexandria, Washington D.C., Arlington County, Falls Church, Fairfax County and other surrounding areas. The City of Alexandria has teamed up with nine other Northern Virginia jurisdictions in a new economic development partnership called the Northern Virginia Economic Development Alliance (NOVA EDA).
The partnership which includes the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership, the Arlington County, the City of Fairfax, Fairfax County Economic Development Authority, City of Falls Church, Fauquier County, Loudoun County, City of Manassas, City of Manassas Park and Prince William County Department of Economic Development will collaborate to promote Northern Virginia as a business and economic development destination.
The collaboration of these jurisdictions has stemmed from the location of Amazon's HQ2. NOVE EDA has released a statement saying "Amazon's desire to evaluate regional assets mimics trends seen across various industries - companies do not see jurisdictional borders and are looking for regional workforce, transportation, housing and liveability assets."
The Nova EDA and The Virginia Economic Development Partnership will be working together to create a brand for Northern Virginia.
