Commuters are trying out different ways to get to work now that the Metro has shutdown service on the Blue and Yellow Line just south of Reagan National Airport in Virginia for the next 3 months as part of an enhancement that they are conducting. For some of these commuters, it means riding a bike to work.
Alexandria Bicycling and Pedestrian Advisory Committee vice chair for bicycling Josephine Liu says that she welcomes all Metro riders who think putting on a bike helmet and hopping on a bike is the best alternative during the three-month Metro shutdown. BPAC is providing mentoring programs to show bike commuters the best, safest routes to work by bike.

Heritage Hill is a townhouse subdivision located in the well established community of Franconia (established in the 1870's). The area will appeal to commuters owing to its close proximity to the Huntington Metro, Old Town Alexandria and I-495. Many homes here are situated close to the forested area of Heritage Hill Park which divides Heritage Hill and Telegraph Road.
Shirley Highway is another name for Interstate 395. The I-395 corridor doesn't have Metro train service, but it carries a massive load of traffic nonetheless. In addition to its 8 to 10 lanes of traffic, 395 has an extra 3 lanes of HOV that switch direction depending on the hour of the day. It is THE major artery from Virginia into the District of Columbia.
395 leaves DC between the Pentagon and Crystal City (both in Arlington) and on the way out to I-95 and the Beltway at Springfield, I-395 passes Shirlington, Landmark, West End Alexandria and other neighborhoods. Traffic on 395 is nearly always heavy but usually slows only during rush hour.

Woodrow Wilson Bridge closes the Potomac near River Towers
River Towers is served by a well developed road system near US Rt. 1, I-495, the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, and the George Washington Parkway.
Because most of the homes around the area were built more than 40 years ago and because there is minimal opportunity or cause for cut-through traffic, the surrounding area is relatively free from the congestion that is commonplace in the Washington Metro Region.
