Mclean is an unincorporated area in Fairfax County in Northern Virginia. McLean is home to many diplomats, members of Congress and high-ranking federal government officials, entrepreneurs and service businesses partially attributable to the close location to Washington, D.C. and the Central Intelligence Agency. It is also the location of Hickory Hill, the home of Ethel Kennedy, the widow of Robert F. Kennedy.

History Of McLean

McLean is a census-designated area in Fairfax County, Northern Virginia. The area was named after former publisher and owner of The Washington Post, John Roll McLean. He, along with the bankroll of French aristocrat Jean-Pierre Guenard and Stephen Benton Elkins, built the electrified Great Falls and Old Dominion Railway in 1906. The community was founded in the year 1910, at the time of the merging of the Lewinsville and Langley communities. The town of McLean is the home of the CIA's headquarters, which were set up in 1961.

From McLean, one can visit Arlington House, Cherry Hill Farmhouse, Clara Barton House, and Falls Church. The Claude Moore Colonial Farm and the Discovery Creek Children's Museum are also within a radius of ten miles of the town. The local churches have some beautiful architectural features that are reminiscent of the bygone era. There are also a number of stunning streams and creeks including Little Pimmit Run, Scott Run, Dead Run, Bryan Branch, and Turkey Run. Langley Shopping Center, Chesterbrook Shopping Center, and McLean Shopping Center are a shopper’s paradise. In addition, the town hosts the 18th Century Market Fair, Fall Russian-Slavic Cultural Festival, and McLean Day celebrations every year.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is close by. Moreover, the Capital Beltway, George Washington Memorial Parkway, Interstate 66, Dulles Access Road, Dolley Madison Boulevard/Chain Bridge Road, Georgetown Pike, and Old Dominion Drive all run through McLean. McLean station on the Washington Metro Silver Line opened in 2014, two miles west of the village near Tysons Corner. WMATA also has several bus routes traveling through McLean.

Alexandria: The Independent City

The independent city of Alexandria located in the state of Virginia is known as George Washington's hometown. Alexandria is also known for being rich with colonial history. Alexandria is located approximately 11 km south of downtown Washington, D.C. As of the 2018 census, the population was 160,035 which grew by 1.75% from the previous year. Due to the proximity of Alexandria to the capital of the United States, majority of professionals are working to serve the US military, federal civil service, or private companies which provide contractual work to the federal government. Some of the major employers found in Alexandria are the United States Department of Defense, United States Department of Commerce, Institute of Defense Analyses, United States Patent and Trademark Office, and the National Science Foundation. The DASH bus, Alexandria's own mass transit system, connects interest points with local transit hubs. Alexandria also offers free bus services between the waterfront and the King Street Metro Station. In terms of school ranking, Waynewood Elementary School came in first in the elementary level followed by Lyles-Crouch Elementary and Charles Barrett Elementary School. For middle school, Hayfield Secondary and Twain Middle School are the top schools. Lastly, for high school, Thomas Jefferson High for Science and Technology and Hayfield Secondary are the top schools.

Mount Vernon Estate & Gardens is the oldest national historic preservation organization in the country, and it has always been in the forefront of the restoration field. Mount Vernon is the most popular historic estate in America and is open 365 days a year. Mount Vernon was the home of our first President George Washington. The grounds are well-preserved as is the home itself. Alexandria Lyceum is a grand hall built in the late 1800's to provide a place for lectures, scientific experiments and quiet reading. Since that time, it has been a Civil War hospital, a private home, an office building and the nation's first Bicentennial Center. In 1985, The Lyceum became Alexandria's History Museum, providing exhibitions, school programs, lectures and concerts, volunteer opportunities and space for rental functions for the community. The Lyceum Museum Shop carries a wide variety of maps, books, note cards and special items related to Alexandria's history. The present-day Lyceum Company serves the museum as a membership and fund-raising organization. Walk to Old Towne! Old Towne is filled with historic landmarks, carriage rides and walking history tours. Just a few miles down George Washington Parkway is the nationally renown collection of museums called the Smithsonian Institution. The Smithsonian National Zoological Park is a wonderful zoo. Civil War enthusiasts might want to inspect Fort Willard just as President Lincoln did. Fort Willard has long since abandoned its military use and is now a quiet park like Fort Hunt. If you are interested in architecture and local history visit Frank Lloyd Wright's Pope-Leighey House or the Woodlawn Plantation.
