Residents in Arlington County are a step closer to having a place to launch their canoes, kayaks, and other non-motorized boats on the Potomac River.

This is after the National Park Service announced that plans for a boathouse with a 300-foot-long floating dock south of Key Bridge have cleared environmental review. The current design plans which called for a 14,000-square-foot boathouse in Rosslyn were cleared by the Arlington County Board on May this year.
The site on the Arlington shoreline, across the water from the northern tip of Theodore Roosevelt Island, would also include a boat storage facility.
This boathouse is a long time coming for Arlington County. Currently, rowing teams from a few public high schools in Arlington have to be driven all the way to Georgetown's boathouses just to get on the river.
This much-anticipated boathouse still has a long way to go. The facility has to be funded, designed, and constructed, which may take several months or years.
